SELECTING PAINT

Selecting paint is a very personal choice for most people. Many factors need to be considered. And with so many colors of paint available, choosing a color can feel like an impossible task. At Carl M. Roller Painting & Powerwashing we work with our customers to help them find the best paint for the job. Usually it starts with a number of questions, including:

  • What area do you want to be painted?
  • How visible is the area you want to be painted? Or, how frequently will it be seen by others?
  • How is the area used?
  • Do you have small children or pets?

We've not yet gotten to color, but these questions can help us determine the needed quality and sheen. Homeowners will often want to have a higher quality paint used in a room more frequently visited by others, like the living room, than they will want to use in a child's bedroom. We'll take that into account.

Sheen

Sheen is important when selecting paint. You'll want to consider how the room is used and how much you like, or don't like, shiny walls. A gloss or semi-gloss paint can work well in kitchens and play rooms as they'll be easier to wipe clean and will stand up to some "abuse." But, if you don't like shiny walls you won't like gloss or semi-gloss paint.

You may love the effect a flat or matte paint can give a room, but it's important to know that they won't be quite as easy to clean.

Most customers will settle on satin or eggshell. Some people love, and always use, one or the other. Other customers will choose one or the other depending on the room, using satins for kitchens, bathrooms and children's rooms, and eggshell for living rooms, dining rooms and adult bedrooms.

Color

That brings us to what is most often the challenging part when selecting paint - choosing the color. Again, we'll ask some questions:

  • What type of style is your house, or do you want it to be? Traditional, contemporary, modern, farmhouse?
  • What is your overall preference for paint - warm, cool, other?
  • How will the area to be painted tie in to the rest of your home?
  • Do you have a focal point for the room that you want to complement?
  • Do you want to stay on trend? Would you prefer your home to look timeless, or to match up to a specific style.

These are just some of the many questions that you'll want to ask yourself when you are considering color. We can say that most customers end up being most happy when they factor in the feeling they are trying to create throughout the house instead of just picking a color they like for one room.

It can be easy for homeowners to fall into the current trend. This can be fine if the trend is likely to hold up or if the homeowner doesn't mind painting their home every couple of years. Other customers will be focused on keeping within the style of their home or creating a timeless look that will hold up over many years.

Ultimately, you'll want to pick a color that works for you. Unless, of course, your purpose for painting is to sell the home or rent out the space. There are many, many resources for you to look at - here are a few good ones:

Ceilings

Many people choose to paint their ceilings white or off-white, and that's certainly fine. But, if you are considering a renovation, or just a different look for a room, don't forget about the ceiling. Painting the ceiling can help a room look bigger, or smaller. It can add a swanky feel or a touch of formality. Either way, homeowners usually find that painting a ceiling is much more difficult than painting a wall. So, give Carl M. Roller Painting & Powerwashing a call and we'll save you the time, as well as the aches and pains.

Exterior

We will help you choose the type of paint that will work on the surface of your exterior. Vinyl, brick, wood and fiber-cement siding all have paints that work better or worse on them. Understanding what works best often comes from experience. The same is true for painting stucco finishes.

When selecting paint color for your exterior many factors can come into play. Homeowners need to consider any homeowners association rules that would affect the color choice. Many homeowners will have their home repainted the same color, or a color very similar. That is the easy and safe decision.

Others will look for a more dramatic impact. If that's you, you should be sure to consider:

  • Other houses in the neighborhood. Most homeowners don't want to pick a color that sticks out as inappropriate.
  • What colors would fit with the original style and era of your home?
  • Are you painting everything on the exterior of your home (doors, shudders, etc.) or just the walls?

That third question is a big one. It can be difficult for homeowners to picture how the new color will be affected by its surroundings. It's one thing to hold a paint swatch up and a completely different thing when that color is painted on the entire house.

Other Surfaces

Selecting paint or stain for the other surfaces inside or outside your home, office building or rental property can be just as challenging. While the designers on television can make creating a unified look seem easy, at Carl M. Roller Painting & Powerwashing we know it can be much harder in reality. When you work with us, we'll rely on our knowledge, expertise and experience to help you select the paint, stain or other finish that will work best for you.

Testimonials

  • Carl painted the entire interior of my home. The job was extremely well-done. I have bull-nose corners and the lines of different paint colors are crisp and perfect. I had news doors installed to my patio and the contractor brought in his own painter to finish the doors. This other painter was very impressed by Carl's work and complimented his skill. When you use Carl, you can be assured that you are getting the most professional and the closest to perfect paint job out there!! Highly recommended!
    -Ann K.

  • Carl has painted our entire home at least 3 times in the 16 + years we have had the pleasure of knowing him. From the moment we met him until, most recently, a month or so ago, Carl exemplifies personalized professionalism not only in his chosen profession, but in his demeanor when speaking about anything. His respect for our home and it?s contents is evident when he first walks into a home?He removes his shoes?despite the fact that we have tile. So not to be too wordy?I want to get across the following because it?s important to know this when choosing a painter?. 1. Carl ?palms? the walls to feel for nail pops which may not yet be evident visually. 2. Preparing the walls to accept paint is the most important aspect of painting?Carl makes sure this phase of the job is not rushed. 3. Color selection...here is an example? The very first time Carl came to us, my daughter Ariel was maybe 6 or 7. Trying to figure out what color she would like, prior to Carl coming over, we had all the color charts?..was impossible?. Carl sat down on the floor with her and simply asked her to bring him 5 of her favorite t-shirts?He told us from there we will know the colors she likes best?Took 5 minutes and we had the color. So all in all?my family highly recommends Roller Enterprises & will continue to use his services?you will not be disappointed!

  • I have used Carl twice in the past several years for power washing and both interior/exterior painting and I highly recommend him. His prices are extremely reasonable, but more importantly, he takes great pride in his work with his attention to detail, thoroughness, and quality workmanship. He is knowledgeable, meticulous, and very clean, treating my house as if it were his own. I will be calling him when I?m ready to paint the entire exterior of my house!?
